Many of you know our story-our journey began just before Thanksgiving when we were searching for a turkey to rescue. Instead, we were connected with Delilah, a pig surrendered from Miami’s only slaughterhouse. She was the first of many who would bring our community together.
Shortly after, Holly and Jolly were surrendered from another live-kill facility at an undisclosed location. The facility had shut down and was trying to get rid of all the pigs by Christmas, selling them for Christmas dinner - a long-standing tradition in South Florida. Their story gained widespread attention after Miami-Dade County’s Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, formally pardoned them. Inspired by this, a compassionate couple stepped forward to sponsor the rescue of another pig, Laz.
Laz, in particular, became the heart of our growing community. After his rescue, he thrived in his foster home, full of personality and curiosity. Once he was strong enough, he was transferred to his forever sanctuary, where he had the freedom to explore and make new friends. But just a week after his transfer, a cold front hit South Florida, and he fell ill. Volunteers at his location noticed he was lethargic, barely moving, and his temperature was dangerously low. That evening, urgent calls were made, and within hours, people from across South Florida - stretching from Loxahatchee to Homestead - rushed to help.
What made this rescue even more incredible was that many of us had never met in person before that night. We had only connected via phone calls, building relationships through our shared passion for rescuing animals, but this was the first time we all came together in real life, united by the urgent mission to save Laz. Our team quickly mobilized, forming a rescue chain that would become the foundation of our alliance.
Our favorite farrier, who is also a skilled vet tech, was among those who responded, administering fluids and vitamins. Meanwhile, others - including Andrew, one of the kindest individuals we have ever met (rest in paradise) -wrapped Laz in blankets and warmed him inside a truck with the heater running. After 30 minutes, his temperature stabilized, and he became more alert, but the work wasn’t over. He was taken to a foster home for overnight monitoring and then to the vet the next day, where he was diagnosed with dehydration and a cold. Over the next few weeks, our team worked in shifts, visiting daily to clean, feed, and care for him, ensuring he regained his strength with a specialized diet.
Laz’s struggle and recovery solidified the network we have today. His need for urgent care brought together individuals who had never worked together before but were willing to drop everything to save him. That night, we became more than just rescuers, we became a true alliance, proving that when compassionate people unite, we can change lives.
Every rescue/sanctuary has played a role in shaping our mission, but Laz showed us just how strong our community is. He continues to remind us why we fight for these sentient beings proving their intelligence, emotions, and resilience every day. Because of him, our alliance was born, and because of all of them, we will continue to grow.
